How to Start the Bobiverse (and What to Binge Next)

A dead software engineer, a self-replicating space probe, and dozens of copies of the same wisecracking guy. Here's exactly how to dive in.

What is the Bobiverse?

Imagine you sell your software company, sign up on a whim to have your head cryogenically frozen, get hit by a car — and wake up 117 years later as a disembodied AI, conscripted to pilot a self-replicating spacecraft into deep space. That's Bob. And because the probe can build copies of itself, soon there are dozens of Bobs, each a slightly different version of the same wisecracking guy, spreading across the galaxy to save what's left of humanity. Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse is comedic hard sci-fi at its most bingeable: big ideas, bigger jokes, and a hero who's basically you, if you were a spaceship.

Start here: We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

There's exactly one place to begin: We Are Legion (We Are Bob), the first book. It sets up Bob's death, resurrection, and multiplication, and it was named Audible's Best Science Fiction title of 2016. Under ten hours, it's the shortest and breeziest doorway into the series — and it does the heavy lifting of introducing the concept, so everything after just gets more fun. Don't start anywhere else.

The reading order

The Bobiverse is strictly sequential — listen in publication order:

Many fans treat the first three as a complete story and stop there happily; Heaven's River (and the books beyond it) are for when you're not ready to leave Bob behind.

THE ONE RULE
"Start with We Are Legion, and go in order. That's the whole strategy. The Bobiverse rewards listeners who don't skip."

Why audio is the way to do it

The Bobiverse is one of those rare series where the audiobook is the definitive format, and the reason is one man: Ray Porter. The central challenge of the books — a cast made almost entirely of copies of the same person — could be a mess on the page. Porter turns it into the main attraction, giving every Bob a distinct, recognizable personality while keeping them all unmistakably Bob. It's a feat of narration that's become legendary among sci-fi listeners, and it's why so many people insist on experiencing these books with their ears. Porter was even inducted into Audible's Narrator Hall of Fame in 2026.

What to binge next

Once you've torn through the Bobs, you have great options. Stay with the Taylor-Porter duo via The Singularity Trap, a darker, standalone first-contact story. For more of Ray Porter's range, Project Hail Mary is the obvious next stop — arguably his finest performance — followed by Peter Clines's cult sci-fi mysteries The Fold and 14. Frequently Asked
What is the Bobiverse? +
The Bobiverse is a comedic hard-sci-fi series by Dennis E. Taylor. A software engineer named Bob dies, wakes up a century later as the AI running a self-replicating interstellar probe, and copies himself into dozens of slightly-different Bobs who spread across the galaxy. It's witty, geeky, and endlessly fun.
What order should I read the Bobiverse in? +
In publication order: We Are Legion (We Are Bob), For We Are Many, All These Worlds, then Heaven's River. Each builds directly on the last, so don't skip around. The series continues with more books beyond these four.
Who narrates the Bobiverse audiobooks? +
Ray Porter narrates every Bobiverse book, and his performance is a huge part of the appeal — he gives each near-identical Bob clone a distinct personality, which is central to how the series works.
How many Bobiverse books are there? +
The original trilogy is We Are Legion, For We Are Many, and All These Worlds, followed by Heaven's River as book four. The series has continued with further installments beyond that, but the first four are the core.
Do I need to love hard sci-fi to enjoy it? +
No. The Bobiverse is unusually accessible — the humor and Bob's everyman voice carry the science, so it's a great entry point even if dense space opera usually isn't your thing.
